Grøderøysa – Old King grave

Grøderøysa is the largest long barrow in Rogaland. When it was measured in 1898, it was recorded as being 38.5 metres long, 9 metres wide, and 2.5 metres high.

The name comes from King Grøder, who according to tradition was buried here. However, the name may also have a natural linguistic explanation, as the Old Norse word grjót means “stone.”

The burial mound has never been scientifically examined or precisely dated. Nevertheless, it can be compared to other long barrows further south on Jæren, which have been dated to around AD 400–600.
